Convivagogy: Learning to Perceive, Participate and Design with Life

From pedagogy and andragogy to a living systems approach to learning. How do we learn to work with life, rather than simply learn about it?

Through my research and practice in living systems design, my PhD in Convivial Food Systems as Living Systems Design, and my training in anthroposophical adult education, I have been exploring a question at the heart of education: how do we cultivate the human capacities needed to perceive, understand and participate meaningfully in the world around us?

Most of us have been educated through pedagogy: a model in which knowledge is transmitted from teacher to learner. Although this has its place, it can leave us accustomed to receiving answers rather than developing our own powers of observation, judgement and insight.

Andragogy, the theory and practice of adult learning, offers a different starting point. Adult learners bring experience, questions, responsibilities and an existing relationship with the world. My training in anthroposophical adult education deepened my understanding of learning as a process of awakening capacities, strengthening independent judgement and discovering methods through experience, rather than simply receiving prescribed solutions.

My doctoral research into Con Viv explored conviviality as a way of designing food systems that sustain relationships between people, place and the living world. Over time, these strands of research and practice began to converge in what I call Convivagogy.

Convivagogy is a living systems approach to learning: one grounded in experience, phenomenological observation, reflection, dialogue and action. It invites learners to look again, notice what is emerging, question their assumptions and develop insights through direct engagement with the world. This is not learning as the accumulation of information, but learning as a practice of relationship. We become practitioners of insight, capable of recognising patterns, working with complexity and responding creatively to the conditions of life.

At Living Earth College, Convivagogy informs how I design learning experiences. We begin with the questions participants are carrying, encounter the living context, and move between observation, reflection and practical experimentation. The aim is not to provide people with another recipe to follow, but to cultivate their capacity to develop their own methods for working with life.

Convivagogy is learning to live, perceive and design with life and to become more capable participants in the worlds we share.
